What is TOMESODE?

The tomesode style originated during the Edo period (1603-1868) and has evolved over time. A tomesode kimono is a formal style of kimono worn by married women in Japan for special occasions such as weddings, receptions, and other formal events.

The tomesode kimono is considered a symbol of elegance and formality. The black color signifies maturity, and the garment is often adorned with family crests (kamon) to indicate the wearer's lineage or affiliation.

The patterns can vary and often include auspicious motifs such as cranes, pine trees, bamboo, plum blossoms, or seasonal scenes. The patterns are usually created using the yuzen dyeing technique, which involves hand-painting or stencil-dyeing.
